The great 1.d4 opening, and the chess opening behind the famous miniseries. Strategic, central, and timeless.
The Queen's Gambit
The Queen's Gambit, 1.d4 d5 2.c4, is one of the cornerstone openings of classical chess. The gambit is more apparent than real: White offers the c-pawn to pull Black's d-pawn off the center, and Black almost never holds the extra pawn for long. What White is really buying is a strong central majority and a long-term strategic grip.
It splits into two great families. In the Queen's Gambit Accepted, Black grabs the pawn and gives back the center. In the Queen's Gambit Declined, Black holds firm with ...e6, leading to some of the most studied strategic battles in the canon, the staple of world championship matches for over a century.
A note for the show's many new fans: the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit takes its title from this opening, but it is a work of fiction by its creators and is not affiliated with Endgame. The opening itself is the real, centuries-old article, and it makes a superb subject for wall art for the strategically minded player.
The positional player who fights for the center with 1.d4.
