The Evergreen Game / a Evans Gambit
The Evans Gambit
The Evans Gambit, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4, was introduced by the Welsh sea captain William Davies Evans in the 1820s. White offers the b-pawn to deflect Black's bishop, then follows with c3 and d4 to build a powerful center and a screaming initiative, all paid for with a single pawn.
For most of the nineteenth century it was a main weapon of the attacking masters, and Anderssen used it to produce the Evergreen Game, a storm of sacrifices ending in one of the most admired combinations on record. Interest faded for a century, then revived when Kasparov dusted it off and beat Anand with it in 1995.
The Evans is pure intent: give up material to play first, fastest, and hardest. Rendered as art it belongs to the player who treats the opening as the opening shot of an attack.
The gambiteer who buys the initiative with a pawn and never looks back.
