Ruy Lopez chess art
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 / ECO C60 to C99
The Spanish Game. Five centuries old and still the deepest test of 1.e4 e5, played at the very top to this day.
The Ruy Lopez
The Ruy Lopez, also called the Spanish Game, opens 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5, pinning the knight that defends e5 and asking Black a long, patient question. It is named for Ruy Lopez de Segura, a sixteenth-century Spanish priest who studied it, which makes it one of the oldest openings still played at the highest level.
Where the Italian Game goes for the throat, the Ruy Lopez plays the long game. White builds slowly, maneuvers the knight to g3 via f1, and presses on the queenside and center for the whole middlegame. Its main lines, the Closed Ruy, the Marshall Attack, the Berlin Defense that Kramnik used to dethrone Kasparov in 2000, are studied to move thirty and beyond.
The Ruy Lopez is the opening of the positional artist, the player who wants to outplay rather than out-shoot. It is chess as architecture. Rendered as art, it is the choice of the player who reveres the classical tradition.
The connoisseur of slow pressure and classical positional play.
