The Philidor Defense
The Philidor Defense, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6, is named for Francois-Andre Danican Philidor, the strongest player of the eighteenth century and the man who declared that pawns are the soul of chess. It is a solid, slightly passive setup that supports the e5 pawn and aims for a sound, compact structure.
Its reputation is that of a quiet defense, but it has a long history of sharp accidents. The Opera Game, Morphy's flawless masterpiece played in a box at the Paris Opera in 1858, was a Philidor, and so was Legal's Mate, the original queen sacrifice that every beginner still learns.
The Philidor rewards the player who values structure and is content with a modest, reliable position. As art it carries some of the oldest and most instructive games ever recorded.
The classical defender who builds a sound, compact position.
