The game
Wijk aan Zee, 1999. Garry Kasparov, then the world's dominant player, produced what many call the finest game of the modern era against Veselin Topalov. It is romantic chess with a twentieth-century engine behind it, calculation of staggering depth in the service of a king hunt.
From a Pirc Defense, Kasparov sacrificed a rook and then chased the black king on a march from a4 all the way to d1, the entire length and breadth of the board, every check forced, every escape square covered. It is modern romanticism, the Immortal Game with a grandmaster's precision.
The decisive moment
The sacrifice 24.Rxd4 cracks the position open, and after 26.Qxd4+ Kxa5 27.b4+ the king is driven into the open. The hunt runs through 32...Kxb4 and 33.c3+ until the king is cornered on d1, the most famous king march ever calculated.
Kasparov's Immortal, four ways.
No game on earth makes a Trace like this. The black king's journey across thirteen squares under fire is a single unbroken line, a piece of generative art that exists only because this game was played.
The Trace
The signature Endgame style: every piece's full path across the 64 squares, painted as flowing lines.
The Position
The decisive board as a gallery plate with players, opening, and result.
The Score
The whole game in algebraic notation, set as editorial typography.
The Sequence
The arc of the game in a grid of boards, opening to mate.
